Destination Wedding: Days 1-5

Thursday, May 21 – Day One
It was a very early morning, but my friend Amy was very gracious to pick us up at 4:50. We checked in and had plenty of time for coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Einstein’s. Some people were ready to party, and they were drinking (warm, unrefrigerated) beers at dawn. Our flight left on time, and we arrived at a practically empty airport in Cancun and we quickly made it through immigration and customs. The van was waiting outside for us, and we hopped in and took off to the resort. We couldn’t believe how efficient our travels were! Hooray swine flu. We drove in a van with a bunch of guys there on a “guys weekend” and there was a guy who sort of reminded me of Chris Rock, and bought our 2 for $5 beers. So a few laughs, two free beers… we were off to a great start! We arrived at the resort at about 11ish (nice and early) and quickly checked in. They gave us a junior suite, which had a couch/lounge area and a larger patio. We grabbed some lunch at the buffet (they had moved the lunch buffet to a smaller area, the Brazilian restaurant, since there weren’t many people at the resort before Memorial Day) and quickly headed out to the pool/swim-up bar. I was pretty cautious with my drinking since I had thrown up in the same exact spot (meaning IN the pool at the swim-up bar) on the first day during our previous trip to the resort (note to self: don’t chug mojitos). I had a few rum and diet cokes, but then we started making swim-up bar friends, and the rounds of shots kept coming. We had quite an assortment of colors, including mango (which provided to be a favorite throughout the trip) and the infamous purple shot (rum, grenadine, and blue Curacao – which is a bootie-kicker). After a long afternoon of drinking in the pool and making new friends, we grabbed some dinner at the buffet and made it a VERY early night (I think we ended up going to bed at 8:00). Oh, and I managed not to defile the pool :)

Friday, May 22 – Day Two
I woke up early to make dinner reservations for us. Fortunately it went very smoothly (I was a little nervous after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor), but I got there 10-15 minutes before 8:00, and I was the third person in line. I was talking to a lady from Dallas, and she had mentioned that her daughters swam on COR. Then her daughter, Kelly, came walking over and it turned out to be a friend of mine (who is actually coming to our reception). Crazy small world. Cliff and I enjoyed another day at the pool and beach. We also got a chance to watch a wedding ceremony, which was great because we didn’t have a rehearsal (so we got a better idea of how things would go). In the evening we had drinks at the patio bar, and the wedding party had roped off an area right next to us. So we got a chance to say hello and ask a few questions. It turned out that we booked reservations at the steakhouse, and that’s where the wedding party had their dinner. So we probably looked like creepy stalkers! Cliff and I enjoyed a nice dinner on the patio overlooking the ocean. Afterwards, we walked over to the main drag of bars and clubs and scoped things out. I had to take a picture with the statue bulldog (there is a bar/club called Bulldogs over by Coco Bongo).

Saturday, May 23 – Day Three
After two days of feeling a little bloated, I got my fluffy butt up and ran for 70 minutes on the dreadmill. That gym was a little sweatbox, so it was a good workout and a nice way to start the day. I think this was my first workout of 5 or 6, so I did a decent job working out while we were there. We were going to have a low-key morning/early afternoon in the pool, but things got pretty fun, and we were rushing to make our 4:30 shuttle. We booked a lobster dinner cruise through FunJet and it was one of the best nights ever. We took a shuttle over to Playa del Carmen, and we met about 5 other couples out on a cove. They took us out in a catamaran for about 90 minutes, and we had drinks and appetizers. Then we came back to the beach and had an AWESOME dinner. Each couple had their own table, and a saxophonist came over to each table and played a song. We got a huge lobster tail and a smaller one for dinner… probably a good 10-12 ounces. After dinner, there was a fire dancing performance and a lot of dancing. We were even excited about dancing to the Macarena, so obviously we were a little sauced.

Sunday, May 24 – Day Four
Cliff and I lounged around the pool and beach in the morning and early afternoon and then squeezed in a quick nap before Kate arrived. It was nice to have Kate to ourselves for a day since we never get to see her (she lives in North Carolina, and she was my roommate for three years in college). The three of us ate at the Japanese restaurant, and the salmon was killer. We capped off the night with some drinks at the patio bar.

Monday, May 25 - Day Five
Jamie, Dana, and Melissa arrived in the early afternoon, my parents arrived in the evening, and Esther (my grandma) and Betty (her friend) arrived at night. Kate treated me to a deep tissue massage at the spa (which turned out to be a couple's massage... how romantic!). I found it a little odd that they told us to keep our "bottoms" on (but maybe they thought it was odd that I asked). It was a big afternoon in the pool for us kids. Wow. My theory is that I like to befriend cool high school kids because I wasn't very cool in high school. So we had a little fun with the senior trippers. Since we weren't sure about dinner plans with the evening and nighttime arrivals, we ate at the buffet and had an early night.
